Enable Telnet in Windows 7

Telnet is a tool use by network administrators to check if some specific ports are open. It is a handy tool for administrators to verify which port is available or not. By default Windows 7 does not have telnet command configure. You will have to install it manually. If you run a command prompt and do a telnet session, it will show the the popular error as below:

To configure telnet in Windows7, open your “Add or Remove Programs” from your control panel. If you find it hard to search for the add or remove programs, they are 2 short cuts to open it.

  • Hit “Windows Key + R” to open the run command, type in “appwiz.cpl” and click OK to open the Add or Remove Programs.
  • Click Start (Windows Logo), type in “add remove” and windows will search for the name, it should show you the Add or Remove Programs on the top list. Click it to open it.

In Add or Remove Programs, click on the “Turns Windows Features on or off” on the left panel, this will open up another small windows. Scroll down and tick the box that say “Telnet Client“. Click OK and Windows will install it.
