It’s been awhile after upgrading my blog to WordPress 2.8.4, I seldom see any new comments posted on my blog up until my regular visitor email and inform me about it. When you try to post a comment, it will show you error message on your Javascript or Cookies problem. I tried to enable Javascript and cookies settings on my site but all settings are correct. The full error can be seen below:

Error Message when posting comments in WordPress

After messing around with my other blogs, which apparently have the same error message. I found out that the plugin WP-SpamFree is the cause of the problem. Once you deactivate it, you can post comments as usual without problem but this open you to spam comments. A visit to the author site of WP-SpamFree and downloaded the latest version 2.1.0.8 fix the problem. Hope this small post would help anyone that’s having the same problem.

Maintaining servers aren’t bad but it will bring headaches when you need to change password often. You may know that default Windows Server 2003 will need you to provide a high security password length and type. The system might not change your password if it is too simple. You can always google around and find a password generator tool.

Here I would like to share with you one of my favorite password generator tools. It’s the PC Tool Password Utilities. It’s free!

This is just a small tool which give you tones of features. As you can see from the screenshot, you can choose your desired password length and select to include other features like letters, mix case letters, numbers, punctuation and number of passwords to generate. The most cool feature is the “no similar characters” option, which will not put the letter “i” and “I” or “o” with “0″…you know what I mean.

You can right click on any of the password selection and copy it. If you could not read the characters properly, the tool does provide you the phonetic pronunciation. How cool is that!

If you still want to use your own password as you think it will be much more secure or easier to remember, then you might want to test your password strength. With this the tool will let you know how strong is your password.

Another add on feature is the password reveal tool, but seems it only works on Internet Explorer. I have tested it on IE8 and it works too! Talk about security in IE8. But these doesn’t seem to be a great tool if you would like to reveal an already typed password. Just a small add-on feature for those who want to reveal their own password…?? You may want to read my previous post on Reveal Your Forgotten Saved Passwords, it’s a powerful password recovery / reveal tool that you might want…

All and all, sorry for the lack of updates as recently there is a big project I’m working on and took away most of my time for learning and preparing. Will be keep updating, thanks for visiting guys!

The web most popular browser had just release their latest version, a big leap from their old version from 3.0.11 to 3.5. But as always, before you did an upgrade, few things to be aware of. Does your add-ons or plugins support for the latest version? Always check on the author’s site for any new updates, but this can be so inconvenient if you have tones of add-ons installed.

Luckily for Firefox 3.5, during the upgrade process it does check for add-ons compatibility mode. It will let you know which add-on need to be upgrade or if there is no upgrades at the moment, the installation will inform you about it and disable it after install. But still the disable add-ons is kept in your browser, every once a while it will check for any updates.

As for my case, 2 add-ons failed the compatibility check. There are Alexa Sparky and Google Gears. It’s quite a big impact to me that alexa sparky does not work. But I believe it will soon be updated. Base on Mozilla’s report, the Add-ons for Firefox 3.5 report show that of 804 add-ons, 87% are currently considered compatible with it. But if you depend a lot on the add-ons, you might wish to wait a little longer before upgrading.

So what features does the new Firefox 3.5 offers? Well, I will not go into details each and every feature but will highlight a few that catches my eyes. After the upgrade completes, you will be brought to the congratulation page. In the page, they show you a new feature call “open video”. Firefox 3.5 support the HTML5 <video> and <audio> elements now. Which is cool that you can embed videos and audios directly, but I not sure what kind of video format you need to encode it.

I try to do some research on The Open Video Project, but somehow it got directed to UNC School of Information and Library Science. huh Anyway, you can try out the open video feature here.

Internet Explorer 8 InPrivate mode or Google Chrome Incognito mode both allow users to browse the web anonymously. This is good if you are browsing from public computers, the pages you visit won’t appear in your browser history or search history, and they won’t leave other traces like cookies on the computer. Well it is Firefox too have implemented it on their latest version. You can go to Tools -> Start Private Browsing or by pressing the hotkey Ctrl+Shift+P to start it. If you have few tabs open in the normal mode, Firefox will save your session and then close it to start private browsing mode.

After you close your private browsing (you will need to launch Firefox again) or stop the private browsing mode, all your previous saved tabs will reappear again.

Another cool thing is now you can drag a tab down and drop it, Firefox will open up a new browser with the page. This is good as from time to time, your tabs may grow and become scrollable from left to right. No one likes to scroll horizontally, not even your mouse. This is a great way to spread your pages into 1 Windows, and from there on you have more tabs to open.

After a tab is being drag out to form it’s own Windows, you can move it back to other Firefox Windows. Joining back the tabs as shown in the picture.

But be caution as the more tabs and more Firefox windows you open, it will take up more resources.

Well, these are a few features that I came into and quite happily for it. But after a few tries on the open video feature, somehow my system got hang until the form of no recover and I have to restart my PC. Then again it works the second time I tried to play some videos. Well, in my opinion, I still think you should wait a little longer before upgrading to the latest Firefox 3.5 version. Technologies are so advance now it wouldn’t take long before it become a more stable version.

How’s your weekend? Enjoy? Well I hope you enjoy your weekends as much as I do but not as good when driving back to KL, as you might know that how long the jam was.

Recently Microsoft had launch their full release of Internet Explorer 8 on 20th April last month (if I’m not mistaken). Being a big fan of Firefox and had been using it since long time ago, I still don’t feel like switching browser anytime soon, especially if it’s Internet Explorer…Well when I visit their site, Microsoft is promoting their latest installment of IE 8 and with the word “Upgrade your Internet experience“, I decided to give IE8 a shot and downloaded the installation package at 16.1MB. So let’s see how does IE8 upgrade my internet experience.

The installation is quite straight forward and with some errors…

So it can’t check my system for any malicious software, well…that’s ok for me.

It also provide options to install Silverlight and MSN Toolbar, Google Toolbar is still my preference hence I omitted to install MSN toolbar. Yes, IE8 finally installed and this is the nicest things I have been seeing each time I install IE browsers.

Why? It’s just a new browser and why we still need to restart after installation? Quite annoying having running so much apps that time, well I choose restart later. Then I try to launch IE 8 and check if it has been updated, well I get bunch of errors hen starting it…

Yup still under IE7, so I reluctantly restarted my system. Waited anxiously to get hold of the IE8 and to “upgrade my internet experience”.

So I try to login to eBay and highlight Apple andclick on the pop-up icon and select the shop items, a box pop up magnificently just like the intro in Microsoft homepage. But mine is a bit different, it show “page cannot be displayed“!! Hmm…izzit something i did wrong? Tried with other links…hm…page cannot be display again. I try Diagnose Connection Problems because the error said that I do not have internet connection, test connectino pass without problem. I still can browse many other sites, just when I try to use the built in acceleration, it failed. I have upgraded my internet experience!

One more thing to note, if you are a web site designer or programmer and you have multiple IE installed, it will crashed and won’t work poperly. Thanks for my colleague’s information.

Well the whole experience in getting IE8 working is giving my a headache, but it could be my system problem that I did not restart as was told and end up screwing up IE8. I have installed IE8 on my home vista machine and it works perfectly, the best thing I found quite useful is their map location. Where you highlight the address and it will show you the Live search map from Microsoft. But it would be much better if it’s in Google map.

Beside that it also have a small built in Vista like preview tabs, which you can activate it by clicking on the icon on the left of the first tab window. Beside that if you are a Windows Live blogger, you may easily highlight a paragraph and blog it instantly. It will be treated as quotes, simple with just few clicks. But it won’t work for Wordpress or blogspot..

After using it for a while, I still prefer firefox instead of IE8. Being taken away the mouse gesture, quick drag and click switching plugins by IE8 is not up to my taste yet. Bur overal it is quite user friendly and much easier to use. On web sites layout, I think IE8 had made quite some improvement, I haven’t seen any websites layout being peel off yet.

So have you tried IE8 and did it upgrade your internet experience?

Annoying! aNNoying! annoING!! Each time whenever I run Firefox browser this stupid or so call security screen will appear!

“A program needs your permission to continue…blah blah blah…”

I had enough of this and decided to turn it off for good! To turn off the annoying box, go to your control panel.

*It is best that you know what application you trust and allow it to run, removing the User Account Control will not appear anymore next time.

Once you are in control panel, click on the “Tun User Account Control (UAC) on or off” link on the left bottom corner.

(Here comes again the annoying box to warn you about blah blah blah…) Click continue.

Next uncheck the box “Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer“, click OK and Windows will need to restart.

So now the problem solve for me and I can open up firefox or other programs without the Security prompt again, what a relief…but there is a catch, you will see a red cross on your taskbar and when you open it it will show you that your User Account Control is turn off. It is advise to turn it on, if this is bothering you then you can even close the notification but not recommended for most users.

But if you feel that this is very annoying as well and you want to turn it off, follow these steps.

Open up control panel again, and click on the Security Center as shown below.

Click on the “Change the way Security Center alerts me” link from the left panel. (Yup, at the time of writting, my Kaspersky antivirus is having some issue… )

Select the 3rd option “Don’t notify me and don’t display the icon (not recommended)“. This will totally disable the icon shown on the taskbar, again please do this only when you know what best for you. Please take note that by doing this you will not be prompt anymore for any alerts or problems that your system might face. Do it at your own risks.

Adobe AIR

Adobe have launch what it could be the next big thing, it’s Adobe AIR. The concept or aims of Adobe AIR is to allow you to have your favorite web applications with you all the time. Be it your online shopping mall, music, entertainment and more. All this can be run on your desktop without the need of a web browser!

One of the benefits is that it runs on most platform, like Windows, Linux or Mac. If you are a software engineer or programmer and already have experience in Ajax, HTML, FLEX or flash, you don’t have to learn up new language as Adobe AIR support all of it. This mean that you can use your existing web development resources to create attractive applications that run on all major desktop operating systems.

So let’s try out what Adobe AIR can do, but first you will need to download and install the software. It took less than 10 secconds to install. You can download it from Adobe AIR homepage. The file size is about 15MB.

Once you have installed, you can browse the ready made AIR applications in the market place. The first thing caught my eye is the DeskTube, the desktop YouTube application. The file size is only 504KB and the icon looks like this and have and extension of *.air.

When you double click on the application, a message will appear to confirm if you want to proceed with the installation. You will see if the publisher identity is verified or not.

Next you can choose which path to install the application.

Once installation complete, you can view youtube videos now on your desktop without any browsers. All functions or logins are available and you can search for any videos in HD too. Just like the normal youtube sites functions when you visit it through browsers.

Other than DeskTube, there are a lot more apps which you can search in the Adobe AIR market place. Apps like eBay, Twitter or Fedex apps. If you like Adobe AIR and would like to know the latest news, there is a blog which you can visit and it seems the lastest news is that Adobe is joining Facebook.

So try it out your self and do you think that Adobe AIR will be the next big thing?
